This page explains the licensing terms that apply to all products purchased on WP Design Vault.
Understanding your licence is important – it tells you exactly what you can do with the products you buy.
GNU General Public License (GPL)
All WordPress themes and plugins available on WP Design Vault are distributed under the
GNU General Public License version 2 or later (GPL-2.0+).
The GPL is the world’s most widely used free software licence. It was created to guarantee end users the freedom
to run, study, share, and modify software. The WordPress foundation has confirmed that all WordPress themes
and plugins must be GPL licensed.
The official GPL licence text is available at:
https://www.gnu.org/licenses/gpl-2.0.html
What the GPL Licence Grants You
When you purchase and download a product from WP Design Vault, the GPL licence grants you the following rights:
- ✓ Use on Unlimited Websites
You may install and run the product on any number of websites you own, manage, or develop – personal projects,
client sites, and commercial websites alike. There are no per-domain fees.
- ✓ Modify the Source Code
You are free to modify the theme or plugin’s PHP code and JavaScript code for your own use. This includes
customising functionality, adding features, or removing unwanted elements.
- ✓ Create Child Themes
For WordPress themes, you may create child themes that extend the parent theme’s functionality. Changes made
in a child theme are preserved when the parent theme updates.
- ✓ Use for Commercial Projects
You may use GPL-licensed products on websites for your clients. You may charge your clients for your development
services, and they may use the product on their website.
What the GPL Does NOT Grant You
The GPL licence does not permit the following, and our Terms & Conditions add additional restrictions to protect
the marketplace ecosystem:
- ✗ Resale or Redistribution on Other Platforms
You may not resell, redistribute, or upload products purchased from WP Design Vault to other digital marketplaces,
download sites, or sharing platforms (including Nulled script sites, ThemeForest, etc.).
- ✗ Sub-Licensing to Others
You may not issue licences to third parties for the use of products you purchased from WP Design Vault. Each user
must purchase their own copy.
- ✗ Removing Copyright Notices
You may not remove or alter the copyright notices, licence headers, or author credits embedded in the source code.
- ✗ Claiming Authorship
You may not claim to be the original developer of a purchased product or represent it as your own original work.
Non-PHP Components (Split Licensing)
Some WordPress products use a “split licence” model, which is legally recognised by the WordPress community:
- PHP code (WordPress functions, templates, hooks) → GPL licensed
- Design assets (premium images, icon packs, proprietary fonts) → May carry separate, more restrictive licences
Each product page and its bundled documentation specifies whether any included assets carry restrictions beyond
the GPL. Always check the product documentation for specifics.
HTML Templates and Non-WordPress Products
HTML templates and other non-WordPress digital assets available on WP Design Vault may not be GPL licensed.
The specific licence for each non-WordPress product is stated on its product page. Common licences include:
- Standard Licence: Single end product, free or paid
- Extended Licence: Multiple end products or SaaS applications
Always check the product page for the applicable licence before purchasing.
GPL and Our Marketplace Policy
WP Design Vault operates as a legal redistribution marketplace for GPL-licensed software. The GPL specifically
allows for the commercial distribution of GPL software, provided the GPL’s terms are upheld.
Our prices reflect the cost of sourcing, reviewing, updating, hosting, and supporting the products in our catalogue
– not a licence fee for the software itself.
