WordPress Tools

WordPress .htaccess Generator

Generate a WordPress .htaccess file with the default rewrite rules and optional HTTPS and www redirects, file protection, browser caching and compression.

Runs in your browser. Nothing you enter is uploaded. Last updated

Use /blog/ if WordPress lives in a subfolder.

Options

Always keep a backup of your current .htaccess. Some browsers rename downloaded dot-files; rename it back to .htaccess before uploading.

How to use

  1. Enter the folder WordPress is installed in (usually just /).
  2. Tick the rules you want. Hover the notes to see what each one does.
  3. Back up your current .htaccess, then download the new file and upload it to the WordPress root.
  4. Load a few pages and the dashboard to confirm everything works.

What this tool does

It writes Apache 2.4 syntax: the standard WordPress block between the “BEGIN WordPress” and “END WordPress” markers, with your optional rules placed above it so WordPress will not overwrite them when it updates permalinks.

Why it matters

Apache servers use .htaccess for pretty permalinks, redirects and access rules. One wrong line can cause a “500 Internal Server Error”, which is why the generator only uses widely used, documented rules.

Tips

  • Nginx servers ignore .htaccess. Ask your host or use server configuration instead.
  • If your site sits behind a proxy or CDN that terminates HTTPS, the HTTPS redirect may loop; use your host’s or CDN’s HTTPS setting instead.
  • Blocking xmlrpc.php disables the WordPress mobile app and some plugins that rely on it.

Frequently asked questions

What is the default WordPress .htaccess?

The rewrite block that sends requests for non-existent files to index.php. It is always included in the output.

My site shows a 500 error after uploading. What now?

Restore your backup or rename the file over FTP, then add rules back one at a time. Some hosts disable certain Apache modules.
