How to use

  1. Enter your database name, user, password and host from your hosting panel.
  2. Choose the environment and the optional settings you need.
  3. Download wp-config.php and upload it to your WordPress root, replacing the old file only after taking a backup.

What this tool does

The tool writes a standard wp-config.php. The eight security keys and salts are generated with your browser’s cryptographic random number generator; nothing you type is sent anywhere.

Why it matters

wp-config.php connects WordPress to its database and controls important behaviour such as debugging and file editing in the dashboard. A clean, well-commented file is easier to maintain.

Tips

  • Turn WP_DEBUG_DISPLAY off on live sites so errors are logged, not shown to visitors.
  • DISALLOW_FILE_EDIT removes the theme and plugin file editors from the dashboard.
  • Treat the generated file like a password: do not share it.

Frequently asked questions

Is it safe to type my database password here?

The page builds the file with JavaScript in your browser and makes no network requests with it. If you prefer, generate the file with placeholders and edit the password locally.

What table prefix should I use?

Any short prefix of letters, numbers and underscores ending in an underscore. Changing the prefix on an existing site also requires renaming the database tables.
