How to use

  1. Enter the taxonomy key, its singular and plural names, and the post types it belongs to.
  2. Choose hierarchical (like categories) or flat (like tags), and the visibility options.
  3. Copy the code into a small plugin or your child theme’s functions.php, then save Settings → Permalinks once.

What this tool does

A taxonomy is a way of grouping content. WordPress ships with categories and tags; register_taxonomy() adds your own, such as Genre for books or Difficulty for recipes. The generator validates the key against WordPress rules and reserved query variables, and writes complete, translatable labels.

Why it matters

Purpose-built taxonomies keep filters and archive pages meaningful, avoid overloading categories, and give editors a dedicated panel in the block editor.

Example

A “genre” taxonomy attached to a “book” post type, hierarchical, shown in the REST API and as an admin column, with archive URLs like /genre/fantasy/.

Common uses

  • Adding Location, Industry or Skill filters to a directory or portfolio.
  • Grouping a custom post type, such as products, events or tools.

Tips

  • Enable show_in_rest or the taxonomy panel will not appear in the block editor.
  • Register taxonomies in a plugin so the terms stay attached if you change themes.
  • Keys are permanent in the database; renaming later means migrating terms.

Limitations

  • The code registers the taxonomy only; it does not create terms or migrate existing ones.
  • Keys are limited to 32 characters by WordPress.

Troubleshooting

  • Taxonomy archive returns 404: visit Settings → Permalinks and click Save.
  • Panel missing in the block editor: show_in_rest must be true, and the post type must support the editor and REST.

Frequently asked questions

Why are some keys rejected?

WordPress reserves certain words as query variables (for example name, year, author, type). Using them as a taxonomy key breaks requests in confusing ways.
